Being raised in Kailua Oahu Hawaii, as a child I have always been fascinated by art and color. My father spent 26years in the military and we were very fortunate to have traveled as kids and raised in colorful settings around the world; Hawaii, Panama, and finally California which allowed me to have a colorful and diverse childhood. My jewelry is a culmination (at any single moment) of the places I have lived and the beauty I’ve experienced.

Growing up was an adventure. Each place held new and exciting energies and colors to my wide-waking eyes. I walked Oneawa Street in Kailua, Hawaii on my way to school each day and feasted on the colors, people and sounds. At the age of nine me and my six siblings were packed into our faded blue station wagon for a blurry-eyed trek across America from California to South Carolina. I saw for the first time the colors at the change of a season State, by State, by State.

The Day the World met Jewelry
In Panama, all those colors in my eyes intersected with jewelry on one particular day. My mother entered a room wearing long beautiful earrings that seemed to capture and reflect- in that fleeting second – all the colors of Panama’s streets, people, beaches and jungles I’d been seeing out in the world around me. This is where my first interest in Jewelry began- I was mesmerized. She also wore a ring, but this ring was different. Tiered and studded with a dazzling array of new and exotic stones I couldn’t place it in my experience of colors. I found out later this ring was a gift from my father from his travels in Viet Nam.

After 4 years in Panama we returned back to Kailua Oahu where I remained until I was twenty one. Kailua Beach, known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world remains close to my heart. I still return to reflect on how fortunate I was to have been raised (partly at least) in this paradise and around the world.

Over the years my travels have taken me to many beautiful locations, from Brazil to France. Twenty two years ago, I discovered another paradise, Costa Alegre Mexico, the Happy Coast. In 2005 I built CASA PIEDRA DEL MAR where I have one of my two design studios. Mexico’s culture, beauty, colors inspire in their own unique way and add endlessly to my work and life.

My jewelry is a culmination of the places I have lived and the beauty I’ve experienced. My creative process is a reflection of my gratitude for those places and people, and a conviction that they are not things from the past – old dusty memories – but living places mingling and finding new beautiful form in the jewelry I create for you.

Kathy, a native of Seattle, has always had a passion for painting. She recalls her first completed piece at about age 9. After moving to Mexico a few years ago, her perspective changed and she was inspired to paint the people and places she saw around her. Here she has her first true studio space which has allowed her to create more paintings in the last year and a half than she has in her lifetime. With the natural light her studio offers she brings to life the beach, jungle and local faces of our village in her realism style; you can feel the palms swaying and see the child’s hair blowing as you gaze at her pieces. Kathy continues to take lessons with other artists to develop her style and further her growth as an artist. Her work can be seen this season at Galeria La Manzanilla.
